Did I Do Something Wrong?

by Ian Cappelli

You unshucked corn body

Scarecrow now astray

From my field for two

Sowed and sodded

Your face: polka-dotted

In a pond of phone blossoms

Eyes in lilied swipes

Your fluttering lids like

A snapdragon

Pinched over text brights

My sarcastic

“Good morning

Awake-sculpture!”

As if you stood solemn through long nights

Your feet in picnic food designed

For two appetites, as if

You swam in my chlorine but somehow

Dissolved in alkaline, as if

As if we’ve died

And you don’t want

Your shared heaven to be mine
