Tiny One by Kimberly Murphy

toenails into the wet clumps of cold sand
while grains cling together
under the opaque brim
squished and
jabbing into corners beside the young, pink, tiny

The sand
The clumps
The tiny one.

Jabbing questions,
he woke her
from dreams of the

needles under her fingernails
slipping into calloused pink,
and piercing her thumbs.
Tiny needles
in the tiny one.

He seized her hand,
kisses into her thumb-
yearning for the pain under her fingernails,
the jabbing,
the tiny one’s,
lips covered in blood.
